NATALIA MIKKOLA

portfolio

Exploring exotic places – the barren explosive landscapes of Iceland, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and South Africa with it’s magnificent wildlife – Natalia Mikkola paints, only her brush is the lens of her camera. Misty gray monochromatic landscapes blur the boundaries between reality and imagination in Karelia, shimmering softly in a countless number of shades – fateful and melancholy, never sad nor frightening, suggestive and captivating. Her series Images and Identity includes images from London and Milan. In Sylt from Nordfriesland, a series of graphic landscapes slowly evolve right before your eyes. Natalia portrays a magical sense of the sensual and mythical in her work.

Photographer Natalia Mikkola grew up on the Crimean peninsula in the Ukraine, where weekend excursions with her grandmother, an avid art expert, laid the groundwork for where she is today. Shortly after her arrival to Åland 20 years ago, Natalia studied Fine Art at Ålands Folkhögskola where she was free to experiment within various media. Before finding her own photographic expression she filled her days with studies in the field of economics – business administration and logistics – while also finding the time to study maritime and transport law. Natalia’s general studies in Fine Art sowed a seed that could not be prevented from germinating, returning to Ålands Folkhögskola in 2011 to study nature photography.

Galleri Duerr has had the pleasure of representing Natalia Mikkola for the past 3 years and has since then curated a solo show at Lydmar Hotel and an exhibition in our gallery space on Vanadisvägen together with the Irish contemporary artist Alannah Robins. Natalia has also shown with us at the Nordic Art and Antiques Fair Antikmässan 2016, Art Week 2016 and the Affordable Art Fair 2015–6. Galleri Duerr also curated a solo show at The Borchardt in Berlin, and a selection of her work is hanging with Moderna Samlare. Natalia is the Festival Artist for Festival O/Modernt Edition 2017, which included an exhibition and silent auction in support of the festival’s artists and performers, held during the week-long summer festival at Confidencen, Ulriksdals Slott.

Previous to working with Galleri Duerr, Natalia’s work was shown at the Art and Antiques Fair in Stockholm and Helsingborg, CVB Art, the Åland Museum of Art and Gallery Skarpans in Mariehamn, with solo exhibitions at the Åland Maritime Museum and the Mariehamn City Library. She has also recently shown with Galleri Torekov this past July.

Her Fine Art chromogenic prints, mounted on plexiglas (Diasec®) are produced at a renowned lab in Dusseldorf.
