Skog 2019 Handwoven, double-sided and transparent weave Material: linen yarn and second-hand fabrics – polyester, silk and cotton. 75 x 200 cm

These woven pieces are in a state between full bloom and slow decay. The materials symbolise transcience, in contrast to the eternal. The sparse bottom weave’s natural materials can easily break down and return to nature. The knots are made of fabric from secondhand blouses and shawls, mostly made of polyester – a castaway material that can never decompose or disappear. What is more valuable, the fleeting or the permanent?

When it comes to textiles, there is a vague border between art, craft and product. People often assume textiles have a specific function; that it will be used in some way and is not readily seen as art in the same way as works made of other materials. Its tactile nature separates textiles from other materials and evokes an urge to touch it. This work was created from those observations. ’Obrukbar’ is a woven blend of material which taken together makes it unuseable: wool, cotton, hemp and different kinds of plastic. Even though it has no practical use, it maintains the same characteristics as a piece of fabric. It can be draped, and the contrast between the materials creates a surface which can be understood without the need to be touched.
