Embroidered Vase, 2021. Hand-built vases in porcelain. Glazed and decorated with embroidery. This project is about embroidery and decorative porcelain. In my practice as a ceramicist, I have often been interested in crafts traditionally linked to female making, and how we value it in today’s high-technological society. I have examined my own prejudices about art and discovered that the more a tradition or method is linked to women’s history, home and decoration, the lower I have valued it. Before making these pieces I‘ve gone through objects left behind by my grandmother and became fascinated by the huge amount of embroidered table cloths she had collected during the years to decorate her home with. By combining floral decorative porcelain and embroidery, I wanted to make an attempt to highlight precious and impressive craft objects often left in the home and make this cultural heritage visible to a new audience. The patterns I found in the table cloths are the inspiration for the patterns embroidered onto the vases. I want to try to re-evaluate the traditions associated with female making that I have mostly seen as decoration, both for myself and for others. Caroline Harrius finished her MFA in ceramics at Konstfack 2020 and is based in Stockholm.
