Emma Hasselblad Swedish, b. 1991
Emma Hasselblad is a textile artist whose artistic practice evolves around hand knitting as the main technique. She explores knitting in relation to body, architecture, history, and knitting traditions.
Emma knits three-dimensional sculptures, spatial designs, two-dimensional images, and wearable and non-wearable garments. The choice of knitting as a practice is based on the technique’s ability to examine shapes, silhouettes, different textures, colours, and colour combinations. She explores the possibilities inherent in knitting: the flexible, stretchy material that the knitted fabric allows.
Emmas technique can be compared to a collage method, where she hand-knits smaller pieces that are then crocheted together into a whole. She knits with various materials—a mix of wool, cotton, and polyester—often using multiple strands of yarn simultaneously to achieve a fluffy and colourful texture.
Emma Hasselblads work blurs the line between fantasy and reality, reflecting these states through large-scale, dreamlike knitted figures and flowers.
Emma Hasselblad received her MFA in Textile Art from the University of Gothenburg (HDK-Valand) in 2019 and a BFA in Fashion Design from ESMOD Berlin, Germany, in 2015. Emma lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
