Gustaf Helsing (b. 1993) has a master’s degree from CRAFT! at Konstfack, with a specialization in textiles. Through weaving techniques and material experiments, he has developed his own expression for pictorial weaving that balances warp effects with selected image elements to enhance the textile-specific qualities of the woven image. His weavings also extend into the space to showcase the woven textile’s ability to function as both pictorial and sculptural objects.

Helsing employs self-criticism as an artistic method. He has woven anxiety to address shame and has engaged with nostalgia as both a potent material and a means to evoke fear of the new and unfamiliar. Furthermore, Helsing questions which past he weaves into the present moment of his pictorial weavings. Here, the fear of loss emerges as a driving force both within himself and in the movements that create a separation between "us and them." Overall, he works with montage, quantity, and reflection as resistance to the one-track mindset, exploring contradictions between the conservative and the progressive.

SV. Gustaf Helsing (f. 1993) har en masterexamen från CRAFT! på Konstfack, inriktning textil. Han har genom vävtekniska och materialmässiga experiment vävt fram ett eget uttryck för bildväv som balanserar varpeffekt med plockade bildelement för att förstärka det textilspecifika i den vävda bilden. Vävarna rör sig även ut i rummet för att visa på den vävda textilens förmåga att vara både bild- och skulpturala objekt.

Helsing arbetar med självkritik som konstnärlig metod. Han har vävt ängsligheten för att hantera skam och hängett sig åt nostalgi som ett å ena sidan starkt material, å andra sidan använt för att väcka rädsla för det nya och främmande. Vidare har Helsing frågat sig vilket förflutet det är han väver in i den nuvarande närvaron av bildvävarna? Där rädslan för förlust uppenbarade sig som en drivkraft både i honom själv och i de rörelser som skapar en separation mellan ett “vi och dom”. Sammantaget arbetar han med montage, myckenhet och reflektion som motstånd till det enkelspåriga, för att undersöka motsättningar mellan det konservativa och det progressiva.
