The forest filters the sunlight through the small heart-shaped leaves of tree seedlings, sorrel, and moss-covered stumps, to the slender stems that attempted life as real trees like pine and spruce. Among them stands the majestic Norway spruce, its wind-sculpted, twisted branches whispering of four hundred autumn storms and an equal number of springs, until one day the wood yielded, and the final descent occurred, abruptly blocking the path like a fallen beam.
