Memories From a Home. In my ongoing work exploring the home and decoration, with a focus on women as the creators of homes—homes as a kind of continuous art project—I’ve been reflecting on the floral wallpaper from my grandmother’s house. Her greatest passion was attending auctions and bidding on stunning ceramics, tapestries, and furniture to decorate her home. As a child, while eating fruit cream from her Meissen bowls, I never considered the craftsmanship behind the embroidered cushions, the patterns in the botanical wallpaper, or all the time spent transforming the house into a perfect home. To me, these were just objects that belonged in a house—mere ornaments, not significant works of art. I have attempted to extract these wallpapers and transform them into something new; by printing layer upon layer with different patterns, I create an abstract painting. I want to see how the setting affects what we perceive as valuable and explore this by taking the objects out of their original context, the home, and placing them in a space dedicated to high culture, the gallery.
