Tinplate 4 — Houyhnmnms

Houyhnmnms. An island in the South Pacific discovered in 1711 by Captain Lemuel Gulliver. His crew aboard the ship The Boldness had mutinied and marooned him on the unknown island. It turned out to be inhabited by a kind of elegant and friendly horses called Houyhnmnms. Their language is similar to Dutch. They do not have a written language; instead, all knowledge is passed down orally. The language lacks a wide range of words and concepts that are central to other languages. For example, words such as conflict, war, and politics have no equivalent in the Houyhnmnms language. Instead, they often refer to an expression that can be translated as "that which is not."

Houyhnmnms.
