Artist Statement
The flag came about in almost the same way as Jasper Johns' 'the flag.' In my case, it's more of a reflection on evenings combined with my active presence on Twitter for a period that led me to decide to create a large painting of the Swedish flag. There are probably other parallels with Johns' work that fit well into my narrative about the thoughts on my piece, which I might have thought we had moved beyond but still seem relevant.
The difference is that the American flag has always been an icon not only for Americans themselves but for large parts of the world. It still evokes strong emotions for many. I myself don't have a clear relationship with the Swedish flag in the same way. No strong memories, and it doesn't evoke any specific emotions. So perhaps it was also a way for me to establish a connection to it that has nothing to do with either the past or our new contemporary era that we now live in.
