ZAHRA ZAVAREH Swedish-Iranian

Overview
Personal experiences form a cornerstone of Zahra’s practice, infusing psychological, social, and sometimes political commentary into her work, often interwoven with elements of irony.

Zahra Zavareh is a visual artist who investigates various forms of storytelling through objects, sculptures, video art, and installations. Her aim is to create narratives that encourage interaction with her work on multiple levels, inviting visitors to engage and evoke emotions through the artistic experience. Her expressive approach remains in a state of flux while consistently challenging the passive role of traditional observers. Her objective is to dissolve the boundaries between the viewer, the artwork, and its context. Recently, she has been drawn to Expanded Cinema as a departure from conventional linear narratives, utilizing video installation to craft immersive experiences within cinematic spaces, focusing on psychological narrative elements over symbolic representation. Personal experiences form a cornerstone of Zahra’s practice, infusing psychological, social, and sometimes political commentary into her work, often interwoven with elements of irony. Zahra draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources, including the French avant-garde movement of the 1930s, particularly Hans Bellmer’s exploration of fragmented bodies, the Situationist International’s use of situations for everyday life liberation, and Foucault’s examination of power dynamics and resistance. Additionally, she is influenced by the concept of Absurdity, notably Albert Camus’s essay on the creation of the Absurd.
